The City Paper (TN)
June 30, 2008
Amy Griffith reports that Metro Nashville Public Schools is changing the way it assigns its English language learner students to the system’s schools. The change will reassign around 600 students from ELL Centers, which could be up to an hour from their homes, to ELL Program Schools in their neighborhoods. The change was prompted in part by the number of students whose parents had opted out of the district’s
ELL services. “Sometimes [families] gave me the feeling that they opted out because they just wanted to be at their home school, sacrificing services,” said LaWanna Shelton, executive director of ELL for Metro Nashville Public Schools.
